Bil Smith
Bil Smith is a pioneering artist-composer celebrated for his groundbreaking approach to compositional notation, transforming everyday images and objects into thought-provoking works of art. His creations engage audiences in a dialogue that connects contemporary life with historical context, often exploring themes of self-acceptance and transcendence. Smith challenges the boundaries of traditional notation, employing diverse media and forms to expand the role of music and art in modern discourse. Born in Paterson, NJ, Smith pursued his passion for both music and art, earning a Bachelor of Music from Berklee College of Music and a Master of Music from Colorado State University. Since his first solo exhibition in 1985, his work has been showcased in major galleries and cultural institutions worldwide. His art has been exhibited and is part of prominent collections, including HSBC (London), Metro Pictures (NYC), Telefonica Brasil (São Paolo), The Broad Art Foundation (Los Angeles), Mannesmann (Düsseldorf) Palais de Tokyo (Paris), Lenfest Center for the Arts at Columbia University (NYC), Arndt Contemporary Art (Berlin), Elizabeth Dee Gallery (NYC), Time Warner (NYC), Fold Gallery (London) and Andrea Rosen Gallery (NYC).
